SXSW :: Portraits

Posted on April 12, 2010

While out at SXSW in Austin, I had a pretty good crew to hang with. I was down there with PawnShop kings who played 3 amazing shows and through them, I met a gang of people that were out from Nashville. While we were either walking the streets or hanging out grabbing a bite I’d shoot some portraits . And if I saw someone who looked eccentric, I’d stop them on the street and ask if I could take their photo. Those are some of my favorites.

The first two shots are my favorite of the trip. This is Scott and Joel of PawnShop kings. They’re brothers and they’re incredibly talented. We were walking from one concert to another and I found this back alley. We decided to shoot some photos and this is what came out:

SXSW ::: Local Natives Video

Posted on March 24, 2010

If you haven’t heard of Local Natives, you need to look them up. They were one of my favorite live performances of the trip out there. They’re melodic with a ton of energy. I shot a bit of video and wanted to share.

SXSW – Some Evening Concerts

Posted on March 23, 2010

Here are a couple of photos from some of the evening shows we saw a couple of nights ago.

This first shot is of Greg Laswell. Super talented musician out of LA.

This here is Andy Clockwise. He came on after Laswell and blew our minds. An amazing performer with tons of energy. You should definitely look him up and find out when he’s playing near you.

SXSW – Metric at the Spin Loft

Posted on March 20, 2010

We have seen a ton of good music so far and still going strong. Yesterdays shows were incredible and I can’t wait to post photos. I’m shooting a ton of film so I feel like I’m going to be doing SXSW posts for a couple of weeks here and there.

We’ve spent a good amount of time mid day at the Spin Magazine loft which is a little quieter, clean and has a ton of fun people. They’ve put on several acoustic concerts and I got to sit on the couch and watch Metric play a couple of songs. Definitely check them out if you haven’t.

Here are a few shots:

SXSW – Day #2 :: Lissie and Choir of Young Believers

Posted on March 19, 2010

South By Southwest has been absolutely incredible so far. The Pawnshop Kings have played two amazing shows which I shot video for and we have seen so much good music. I wanted to post a few of the photos from two of my favorite performances on Wednesday.

The first is Lissie. I first hear her music on KCRW and fell in love. She has a powerful voice,with a bit of a rasp and sings with her heart. I shot video of one song I’ll post later but here are some photos for now:

The next band is out of Denmark and called Choir of Young Believers. The frontman and brains behind the band is 26-year-old Jannis Noya Makrigiannis. I love their sound and the concert did not disappoint. Here are a few of my favorite photos.

SXSW – Day #1 The Arrival

Posted on March 17, 2010

I absolutely am in love with Austin Texas. We showed up with a bit of rain but the city is incredible. The buildings are old and full of great aesthetics. I’m excited for an incredible line-up of bands I’ll be seeing while I’m out here. I’m here with the Pawnshop Kings and will be shooting all of their concerts. Let me know if you’re out here and I’ll let you know where I’ll be. You can always follow me on Twitter (click the button at the top of the page) and I’ll be writing about what I’m up to.

Here are a couple photos from today:

This is Sara Overall. We went to a local spot playing some pre-SXSW music and she is a musician that stood out to me. Sara has an old fashioned style to her voice and sings sweetly but powerfully. Here are a few photos of her:

WPPI and This Crazy Year

Posted on March 7, 2010

I head off to WPPI this morning (which is a photo trade show for all you non-photographers out there) and I’m so excited to hang with a bunch of my photo friends. It’s such a fun time. If you see me around, definitely come say hi and introduce yourself! I love meeting new people and coming home with new friends.
This is the start to a crazy busy month and then an even crazier year. I’ll be in Vegas this week, home for a three days filled with either photo shoots or engagement shoots, then I’m headed to Austin, TX for the SXSW music festival to shoot some photos of a bunch of bands. Then I’m traveling for a couple engagement shoots and soon enough weddings are starting up. I’ve booked some of the most incredible weddings that I’m really looking forward to this year with some amazing couples. I’ll be shooing in Los Angeles, New York, Boston, Lake Tahoe, Baltimore, San Fancisco and more. It’s going to be a good year!

Here’s a shot of me and my wife, Lindsay. This was shot by Sherry-Lu at Jessica Claire’s workshop. Jessica had us as the subjects for the day and we were surrounded by 22 photographers. Looking forward to seeing Jessica’s photos and have loved getting shots from some of the other great photographers that were there:
